Regulatory treatment of creatine monohydrate varies by country and intended use. In some jurisdictions it is sold as a dietary supplement, while in others it may be treated as a food ingredient or a pharmaceutical raw material. Pharmacopeial monographs, where available, define identification, assay limits, and impurity thresholds. Manufacturers often follow these monographs or internal specifications to ensure batch-to-batch consistency. Analytical method validation is important because different methods can yield different apparent purity values if sample preparation or detection conditions are not controlled.
Quality control for creatine monohydrate begins with identity confirmation and assay determination. Laboratories commonly use high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, often after derivatization or using a suitable column, to quantify creatine. Karl Fischer titration measures water content, which helps verify the monohydrate stoichiometry. Additional tests screen for heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbial contamination depending on the intended use. These tests establish composition and purity rather than biological effect.
Stability studies examine how creatine monohydrate changes under controlled temperature and humidity. The solid is generally stable when kept dry, but moisture can promote hydrolysis to creatinine, especially in solution or at elevated temperatures. Color, odor, and assay values are monitored over time to detect degradation. Because degradation pathways depend on storage conditions, shelf-life claims should specify the tested packaging, temperature, and humidity. Open questions remain about the long-term behavior of different crystal habits and particle sizes.
Recommended storage usually involves a sealed container kept at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. High humidity can cause caking, which changes flow properties and may complicate accurate weighing. Repeated opening of containers exposes the powder to air and moisture, so smaller aliquots can reduce handling effects. Storage temperature ranges are not absolute requirements; they reflect conditions that slow degradation and preserve consistent physical characteristics. Clean, dry tools help prevent contamination during sampling.
Identity and purity are commonly assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography, often with ultraviolet detection, and by spectroscopic techniques such as infrared or nuclear magnetic resonance. These methods can distinguish creatine from creatinine and detect related impurities. Moisture content may be measured by Karl Fischer titration or loss on drying. Particle size, bulk density, and heavy metal limits are additional quality parameters. Not every product is tested by every method, so specifications depend on the intended use and regulatory framework.

Creatine monohydrate is one of several solid forms of creatine described in the literature. Other forms include anhydrous creatine, creatine hydrochloride, and creatine ethyl ester, each with different solubility and stability characteristics. The monohydrate is distinct from creatinine, a spontaneous breakdown compound that forms when creatine loses water and cyclizes. Commercial descriptions sometimes use synonyms such as methylguanidoacetic acid or N-(aminoiminomethyl)-N-methylglycine, which refer to the same base molecule. These names appear in chemical databases and product labels.
Creatine monohydrate is a crystalline compound formed when one molecule of creatine binds with one molecule of water. Creatine itself is a nitrogen-containing organic acid involved in cellular energy transfer, particularly in muscle and nerve tissue. The monohydrate form is the most common solid form used in research and commercial products because it is relatively stable and easy to handle. Its molecular formula is C4H9N3O2·H2O, and its molar mass is about 149.15 grams per mole.
Analytical methods for creatine monohydrate focus on identity, purity, and degradation products. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is common, often at a wavelength near 210 nanometers. Titration and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can also quantify the parent compound. Pharmacopeial monographs specify tests for appearance, solubility, water content, and related substances, including creatinine. Purity values above 99 percent are typical for pharmaceutical-grade material, though supplement-grade products vary. Independent verification can detect label discrepancies.
Sourcing and verification of creatine monohydrate involve both manufacturing origin and third-party testing. Industrial production commonly starts with sarcosine and cyanamide, followed by crystallization to obtain the monohydrate. Some products are derived from animal sources, while others are synthesized from non-animal precursors. Certificates of analysis report assay, heavy metals, and microbial limits. Regulations differ by country: in the United States it is sold as a dietary supplement, whereas in the European Union it falls under food supplement rules.
== Disease relevance == A deficiency in any of the enzymes of this complex as well as an inhibition of the complex as a whole leads to a buildup of branched-chain amino acids and their harmful derivatives in the body. These accumulations lend a sweet smell to bodily excretions (such as ear wax and urine), leading to a pathology known as maple syrup urine disease. This enzyme is an autoantigen recognized in primary biliary cirrhosis, a form of acute liver failure. These antibodies appear to recognize oxidized protein that has resulted from inflammatory immune responses. Some of these inflammatory responses are explained by gluten sensitivity. Other mitochondrial autoantigens include pyruvate dehydrogenase and branched-chain oxoglutarate dehydrogenase, which are antigens recognized by anti-mitochondrial antibodies. Mutations of the BCKDK gene, whose protein product controls the activity of the complex, may result in over-activation of the complex and excessive catabolism of the three amino acids. This leads to branched-chain keto acid dehydrogenase kinase deficiency, a rare disease first described in humans in 2012.

=== Hydrates and aqueous solution === The hexahydrate Dy(ClO4)3·6H2O is a commonly used crystalline form. In dilute aqueous solution, Dy3+ is strongly hydrated, while perchlorate behaves mainly as a weakly coordinating counterion. Raman-spectroscopic studies of aqueous dysprosium perchlorate solutions support an inner hydration shell containing approximately eight to nine water molecules around Dy3+, with increasing ion pairing only at higher concentrations. Thermodynamic measurements of aqueous rare-earth perchlorates likewise show that dysprosium perchlorate behaves as a strongly hydrated electrolyte, with non-ideal solution behavior arising from both hydration and ionic association.
Numerous health benefits have been claimed to correlate with drinking kombucha; there is little evidence to support any of these claims. The beverage has caused rare serious adverse effects, possibly arising from contamination during home preparation. It is not recommended for therapeutic purposes.

In March 2024, the Japanese Ministry of Health ordered stores to remove three RYR dietary supplements (Benikoji ColesteHelp, NaishiHelp Plus Cholesterol and Natto-kinase Sarasara Tsubu) produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical after reports of thousands made ill. Over a hundred people between the ages of 40 and 80 were hospitalized, and five had died as of 29 March, with four of them from kidney problems. There have been more than twelve thousand cases of health problems reported by users. The company said it uses a strain that does not produce citrinin. It has found puberulic acid in the recalled products and is looking into whether the substance might be linked to the fatalities. The suspect batch was manufactured in 2023. Some analysts have placed the blame on industry deregulation, intended to boost economic growth by facilitating the approval of health products. Benikoji products such as miso paste, crackers, food coloring, and a vinegar dressing made by other companies were also recalled. Kobayashi Pharmaceutical officially discontinued production of beni koji products on 8 August 2024.
A-DNA One of three main biologically active structural conformations of the DNA double helix, along with B-DNA and Z-DNA. The A-form helix has a right-handed twist with 11 base pairs per full turn, only slightly more compact than B-DNA, but its bases are sharply tilted with respect to the helical axis. It is often favored in dehydrated conditions and within sequences of consecutive purine nucleotides (e.g. GAAGGGGA); it is also the primary conformation adopted by double-stranded RNA and RNA-DNA hybrids.

Successive administrations have promised changes in strategy but have upheld the use of militarized tactics. Under President Enrique Peña Nieto (2012–2018), the government pledged to shift focus from high-profile arrests to de-escalation and reducing violence, but setbacks such as the prison escape of cartel leader Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán and the 2014 Iguala mass kidnapping drew international condemnation. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018–2024) pledged to address the social roots of crime through poverty reduction and youth programs, and declared that the war was over; however, the statement was criticized, as security policy continued to rely on the newly created National Guard, which has gradually replaced the Mexican Army in policing roles. This strategy has continued under President Claudia Sheinbaum (2024–present). Since the beginning of the conflict, law enforcement in Mexico has been criticized for corruption, collusion with cartels, and impunity. Federal law enforcement has been reorganized at least five times since 1982. During this period, there have been at least four elite special forces created as new, corruption-free soldiers who could fight Mexico's endemic bribery system. The militarization of Mexican society has drawn criticism for human rights abuses, such as extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, targeting of journalists, and torture.
Moroidin and its analogous celogentins all have activity comparable to that of vinblastine, and a third group of celogentins all have reduced activity. In contrast, stephanotic acid, a cyclic compound analogous only to the left-hand ring and containing the same Leu-His linkage, has no anti-mitotic activity. Other anti-tubulin agents used as chemotherapy agents have painful side effects known as neuropathy when the drugs are exposed to tissue. Although the exact mechanism for the cause of neuropathy is unknown, it is thought to be related to the degradation of microtubules, which are essential components of neurons.
== Future Applications == Reticular cells were once considered passive structural elements. However, they are now being recognized as potential regulators of immune function. Their influence extends from organizing lymphoid tissue to now even directing immune responses and contributing to tumor regulation. As researchers continue to uncover the complexity of these cells, new technologies such as single-cell RNA sequencing are being used to provide more insight into their genetic diversity and viability in the body. Future studies will likely focus on manipulating these cells to improve immune therapies, including against tumors which could be extremely beneficial in the world of medicine.. By mapping how each subtype interacts with immune cells and signaling molecules in the body, scientists may be able to utilize reticular cells to enhance vaccine responses and accelerate wound healing. Lütge, Pikor, and Ludewig (2021) emphasize that understanding the cellular differences of different reticular cell subtypes will be critical for developing targeted treatments that alter the immune system safely and effectively. In conclusion, reticular cells occupy many unique positions in tissue structure and offer the human body immune regulation. Continued exploration of their biological structure and interactions will not only deepen our understanding of the immune system but may also alter how clinicians approach diseases that involve immune system irregularities.
== Function == This gene encodes one of the two alpha chains of type XI collagen, a minor fibrillar collagen. It is located on chromosome 6 very close to but separate from the gene for retinoid X receptor beta. Type XI collagen is a heterotrimer but the third alpha chain is a post-translationally modified alpha 1 type II chain. Proteolytic processing of this type XI chain produces PARP, a proline/arginine-rich protein that is an amino terminal domain. Mutations in this gene are associated with type III Stickler syndrome, otospondylomegaepiphyseal dysplasia (OSMED syndrome), Weissenbacher-Zweymuller syndrome, and autosomal dominant nonsyndromic sensorineural 13 deafness. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.

Karl Fischer titration is a standard method for measuring water content in solid and liquid samples. The result helps confirm the expected monohydrate stoichiometry. Loss-on-drying can also indicate moisture but may not distinguish water from other volatile substances.
Creatinine forms through irreversible cyclization and loss of water from creatine, and the rate increases with temperature, moisture, and pH changes. In dry solid form, the reaction is slow. In solution, degradation can become noticeable over time.
A specification typically lists assay range, water content, appearance, identification, and limits for heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbial counts. It may also include particle size distribution or bulk density for handling purposes. These parameters are distinct from any claimed performance effect.
Solid product can remain within specification for years when stored dry and sealed, but expiration dates reflect manufacturer testing and regulatory conventions. Moisture and heat increase conversion to creatinine, so storage conditions matter more than the printed date alone. Degradation is gradual and can be monitored by purity testing.
